Car Photos: VW XL1 SEV

Thanks to my friend Mohammed Noor for sending this VW in. Definitely not something from our usual cruise night line-up!

This is the VW XL1 SEV (Super Efficient Vehicle). In times of rising gas prices and never ending traffic, perhaps something that looks futuristic and doesn’t hit your wallet too hard might be just what we need! Keep the v8’s and big toys for the evening sessions in Jumeirah.

The XL1 SEV was unveiled at the Qatar Motor Show in 2011, Volkswagen has confirmed that 200 models will go into production.

“Pioneering construction techniques, an advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain and innovative packaging all play a part in allowing the XL1 to return 313 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 21 g/km of CO2 to set a new benchmark for vehicle efficiency…The TDI engine is linked to an electric motor and a seven-speed DSG gearbox with an automatic clutch mounted between each unit. The electric motor can either work independently of the TDI engine or in tandem when accelerating. Accelerating from rest to 62 mph can be achieved in 11.9 seconds; the electronically limited top speed is 99 mph. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid system, the two-seater can cover a distance of up to 50 km in all-electric mode and therefore with zero local emissions.”

For those who like a little more speed to go along with high efficiency, VW also proposed an XL Sport, capable of reaching 270 Km/h

“At the rear of the XL Sport sits one of the finest achievements in engine technology – the V2 adapted from the new Ducati 1199 Superleggera, the world’s most powerful two-cylinder motorcycle. Like the XL1, of which only 250 units will be built, the Superleggera is also being manufactured in a limitededition (500 units), in a process that embraces hand fabrication and high-precision industrial manufacturing technologies alike.”
